Dorset businesses are invited to the Spirit of the Sea Maritime Festival 09 Launch event being hosted at the Weymouth & Portland National Sailing Academy on Wednesday March 4th with registration starting at 4.30pm.

There will be a review of the ‘08 event showing how successful Spirit of the Sea was in its first year delivering an estimated worth to the economy of Weymouth & Portland of around £1.5 million through 33 events at 22 venues over the nine days of the event.

Gary Fooks, Spirit Chairman, says “Many businesses throughout Dorset are still searching for ways to benefit from the forthcoming 2012 Olympic & Paralympic Games, Spirit of the Sea is positioned as a major 2012 legacy project and provides businesses of all kinds many opportunities to benefit from the additional publicity and energy generated by this fantastic event”

Roy Griffiths, Event Manager  said “There are many ways in which businesses can be get involved either on a passive or pro-active way through either sponsorship, organising an event of their own or exhibiting at an existing event that matches the profile of their business. Phone calls come in just about every day with a new idea or event for Spirit from organisations and businesses inspired by the benefits of linking in to Spirit of the Sea and the additional publicity it generates”.

We’ve just spoken with Trevor from Weymouth Sailing School who has managed to dodge the cold snap and is currently operating in the Carribean.

If this cold weather continues I think we should all go out and join him.

I have been trying to finish Clive Woodwards book ‘Winning’ which is a good read for both sport and business as he reorganised the England Team into a more profesional outfit using many methods he had applied to his business’s in the past.

After a bad defeat by the Irish he used this statement to help the team understand why they had to forget the defeat and move on - I think it might help all of us in business right now to understand why we turn up at our desks every day - they went on to win the world cup!

The Man in the Arena

It is not the critic who counts; not the man who points out how the strong man stumbles, or where the doer of deeds could have done them better. The credit belongs to the man who is actually in the arena, whose face is marred by dust and sweat and blood; who strives valiantly; who errs, who comes short again and again, because there is no effort without error and shortcoming; but who does actually strive to do the deeds; who knows great enthusiasms, the great devotions; who spends himself in a worthy cause; who at the best knows in the end the triumph of high achievement, and who at the worst, if he fails, at least fails while daring greatly, so that his place shall never be with those cold and timid souls who neither know victory nor defeat.
