Golden Rules of Marketing

Marketing plays an essential role in the process of producing a product and then selling it, think about the four P’s - product, price, position and place - in other words what are we selling, at what price, who are we up against and where do we find customers.

Develop a clear marketing strategy

  • Are you clear what your business proposition is, keep it simple and avoid jargon and acronyms when explaining what you do.
  • Think very carefully who your key prospects are don’t convince yourself that everyone is your client, if you owned a restaurant who would be your ’starving crowd’ - clients who desire your product so much they will beat your door down.
  • Allocate resources to marketing, who are the best suited members of your staff to promote your product or services, if a member of staff hates making phone calls why ask them to run your telesales campaign.
  • Think very hard about simply advertising your services, there are two types of advertising, brand building and offer lead, the latter may be suitable for sales but brand building can be incredibly expensive so you will need very deep pockets.
  • Every business has great stories to tell so utilise public relations campaigns, however make sure that the subject matter is a little bit more interesting than ‘ABC Ltd still going after two years’ how about ‘ABC Ltd doubles turnover in second year’.
  • Market research can give a fascinating insight into the marketplace and is much better than making optimistic assumptions.
  • Test and measure every aspect of your marketing, it is better to send 20 test e-mails and gauge response before committing to a 1000 e-mail shot to all your prospects.
  • Are you continually focused on explaining the benefits of dealing with your business.
